A real page-turner, this debut novel by Jacqueline Friedland was absolutely incredible! It was impeccably researched and the protagonist, Abigail (Abby) Minton, takes the reader on her journey from England in 1845 for a better life with her family friend, Douglas Middleton, a wealthy British expat who runs a shipping company in Charleston, South Carolina. Unlike most others in Charleston, Douglas doesn't own any slaves, and it's immediately apparent to the reader that he's an abolitionist. This choice, however noble, cost him the lives of his wife and young daughter in a fire two years prior to Abby's arrival. When Abby begins showing an interest in abolitionists activities, Douglas does everything he can to prevent further tragedy, especially as his feelings for Abby turn towards love.

I could not put this book down and was sad when it was over. Friedland's use of language is simply equisite and her ability to paint vivid images in her readers' minds is astounding. An incredibly well researched historical fiction novel that takes you to Charleston, South Carolina in the pre- civil war era , brings you on a journey of suspense, intrigue, love and friendship with many twists and turns along the way. An ugly time in american history is so beautifully portrayed with moral conflict oozing out of every nook and cranny.Friedland's ability to illuminate the internal dialogue going on inside each character's mind makes you truly care for the characters. I cannot wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend this book. You will not put it down!

I really enjoyed this book! Story is about a young woman who has been abused by her uncle and afraid to tell her family because this uncle helps support her family. Her family decides to send her to Charleston (they live in England) to live with a family friend, The family friend is a young man of wealth who lost both his wife and daughter in a fire due to his being a suspected abolitionist. So he and this young woman both have an angry outlook on life. So it's Charleston steeped in slavery, wealthy plantation owners and their wives and daughters. Then we have others trying to do the right thing, underground railroad. Romance finds it's way but can she overcome her mistrust in men and can he get over the loss of his family for doing something he strongly believes in?

I truly anticipated that this book was more about the underground railroad, slavery, and life in the antebellum South than it was. As a romance novel, it is what I consider an average to above average read. Nothing against the book just not quite what I was expecting.

I truly could not put down this book and I read it in one day!I was looking for a book about Charleston during the 1800s to cement what I had learned while on a recent weekend visit there. Whether you have been to Charleston or not, this book describes in just the right amount of detail, the life of Charleston society and the slaves that kept that society going. Romance and abolitionism come together for a gripping tale that will leave the reader informed and appreciative of the people who, in this context and others, risked their own lives and those of their families, to help those less fortunate than them.

Ms. Friedland has created a story which brings you back to a time in American History where there was true moral conflict between those who not only relied on slavery, but who believed in its place in society, and those who could not fathom ownership of another human being. The characters seemed familiar, and the story truly imaginable, but not ever told quite this way. I thought of Roots, Gone With The Wind, and even the recent Underground Railroad as I read this new and wonderfully written story. I highly recommend Trouble The Water

Didn’t care much for this book. The words and expressions used didn’t seem true to the period. Outcome was predictable.

I loved this book from the first page to the last. The descriptive language and riveting storyline grabs your attention and draws you in immediately. An incredibly well researched novel. you feel as though you're living in Charleston in the mid 1800's. Amidst the time of slavery, a hideous part of our nation's history, Ms. Friedland manages to illustrate the goodness and strong character of a devoted underground abolitionist movement while alternatively weaving in a love story with its own twists and turns. This is a fast paced and hearty novel that will keep you engrossed the whole way through!
