As someone who was not taught fiscal responsibility during childhood, this book helped to change my life. I purchased this as well as "Personal Finance in your 20's for Dummies" and read them cover to cover. There was so much misinformation my friends and family were taught, and so many poor habits were uncovered when I read this. I spent much of my adult life living paycheck to paycheck, scrounging to feed myself between bills. In the course of about 4 months, I have managed to save several hundreds of dollars each month, establish an emergency savings fund of several thousand dollars, a stock brokerage account, a new 401(k), invest in a safe mutual fund, and trimmed my bills and insurance payment to reasonable numbers without the unneeded bells and whistles. I cannot express enough how easy it is to simply read this and other books and change your financial life for the better. Being financially secure has improved my happiness exponentially.

One of the best personal finance books out there. Practical straightforward advice for the post-college set and those older adults who have not been paying attention. Written in plain English. Highly recommend for your college grad or late twenties child who is still living at home.

It's good for people who are just starting out. Those who are just getting out of college or high school. It gives you a basic overview over everything financial. However if you want to dig deeper you'll have to read other books, which is given a list of recommendations in the book. If you want a basic understanding some general advice then it's a good book in that aspect. This won't make you a millionaire, but gives you a good understanding of what to expect when you start your job. It gives you a grip on your finances so later on you are not struggling.

I'm forever grateful for this book. It completely changed my life. I learned everything I needed to know about getting my finances in order and found the first uncomplicated explanations for how health insurance works, what IRAs are, what 401Ks are, credit cards, savings accounts, stock, bonds, investing, credit scores and reports. Great explanation and tips on student debt, house-buying, renting...etc,etc. It's a consolidated reference manual and guide to all the grown-up stuff you need to know when you become a grown-up but don't pay attention to until it's too late. I recommend this for anyone in their 20s and 30s, young couples or families, who don't have a thorough understanding of the above-listed things. This is easy to read, you can easily skip around, and she even gives you a "Cliff Notes" Version, but I recommend reading it all if you can because it's such crucial information. The book isn't very long anyway and you can go at a leisurely pace skipping to the most relevant things for your life. I got my husband and I completely out of credit card debt, paid off our car, put us on a strict budget, and even accrued legit savings after learning and implementing what I read in this book. I am so thankful for it for putting us on the right track and explaining what I never really had a clear grasp on.

This book is highly informative. It's organized and easy to read, with excellent charts. Kobliner doesn't dumb down the ideas, but she doesn't use fancy terms either. With clear prose, she leads the reader through the good and bad of finances, how to set up your money for now and for the future. She also gives many resources, both websites and books, for further research. After reading this book, I am much for confident and prepared to deal with my finances. I highly recommend.

I bought this book when I was in college and 4 years later I still refer to it when I'm in need of information. Kobliner outlines the basic, yet pretty important, financial topics. Definitely good for beginners, maybe not for those with a complex understanding of finance. Regardless, if you feel out of control, this book will help.I found the following information the most helpful:Chapter 2 - Taking Stock of Your Financial lifeChapter 6 - 401K PlanningChapter 7 - Renters and HomeownershipChapter 8 - InsuranceEvery 6 months I refer back to page 42, Kobliner's guide to what financial information you need to hang onto and what you can throw out now.Overall great information (but you need to apply it to make it work for you)!

A really great book for anyone who is clueless about how to handle their personal finances or invest wisely. Fortunately my dad instilled some good common sense in me as far as managing my money so I was glad to see that I was doing things right more or less. The three big things I learned were:1) Index funds/mutual funds are where to put your money2) It's perfectly fine to rent instead of buy, look at amortization schedules3) Live below your means.

I read one of the earlier editions while still in school in the early 2000's. After friends had asked me what book to read to get a grounding in: What are bonds? I realized that almost all of the investing books are either pitching retirement plans for baby boomers who failed to save, or fairly exotic investments like stock options and commodities. Finally I found Beth Kobliner's book again, reread it, and it is just as good as I remembered. The tables are easy to read, and she very clearly explains and illustrates how compound interest can either work for or against you. All the major financial topics that a 20-30 year old is likely to encounter are covered well.
