Review

“Writing Magic is a great introduction to writing for children. The “voice” is upbeat and not condescending. It is clearly written, and includes examples when they are needed. As far as I know, there is nothing else like this available.” (Harold Underdown)“A veritable treasure trove of advice and guidance for writers across a range of ages.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“What comes through on every page is Levine’s passion for craft. Aspiring writers of all ages can dip in and out of this book, which has the clarity and sparseness of Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird.” (Publishers Weekly)“Levine is a friendly mentor in these pages.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

I love love this book! I needed something to help my daughter to start writing or getting ideas in preparation for a summer writing camp. I wanted her to get the most out of the camp and not be "stuck" if she was asked to do different things. I think this book is great because it has encouraged her to write, and be creative. There are no wrong answers... save everything! The chapters are short and to the point. Creativity is welcome, it's not "restricting". My daughter was excited when she read the part that the author wrote "Ella Enchanted"!!! She started cheering! I made her read that chapter out loud, because I knew she would react that way!

This is oneof the best "writing advice" books I have stumbled across in ages. It is for the YA group, and written for that level of understanding both for young wirters and those who write YA genre material. There are exercises included that will help break the mold of what and how you write, forcing you to take concepts that may be total tropes, or might be outside your experience, and turn them into learning experiences. I know those exercises have driven me crazy, but my pre-readers are seeing a marked difference in my work. Thank you, Gail Levine!

What a great book for kids that love to write. Love that the chapters are short and they give you "exercises" at the end, that make you want to write. My boys who are only 12 and 13 love this book and look forward to the end of the chapter to see what they get to write about. I love that she talks about just getting the story out... editing will be done later. She progresses on topics as you move into the book. But she explains not to sweat the small stuff that can be fixed later. That writers block is normal and tips on how to move past it. This book has helped my boys love to put their stories on paper without fear! So glad I got this book!

Where to start?! I cannot say enough great things about this book. Full disclosure; I am NOT the target audience for this as I'm well over the age this was written for. However, this is one of the best books on reading that I have come across. As an adult you'll likely whiz through it in one sitting but the advice provided is absolutely invaluable. After reading, I passed the book along to my teenage son to read, I'll likely even give it to my 17 year old daughter as well. The book offers practical, sage advice along with writing assignments to tackle along the way. While I didn't undergo the writing assignments I believe that they would be very useful to any youth reading this book as it provides a structured way of writing and helps them put advice into motion.

It's honestly a shame I didn't run into this book when I was much younger and at the beginning of my writing career. I probably would have devoured and adored this book back then. As it was, I ended up being perhaps a bit old for the target audience and far too familiar with practical writing advice. So I ended up mostly just nodding along and not learning anything new.Still, it's Gail Carson Levine, and she writes in such a fun and engaging way that I still ended up reading the whole thing anyway. If that's not a testament to her skill, I'm not sure what is. Something about her writing is just engaging and soothing all at once.I may not be the perfect target audience for this book at this point in my life, but I can at least recognize the help it could provide to someone who IS in the right demographic. If I run into any young budding writers who need a word of encouragement, I'll be quick to give them this as a gift.

Before I picked this book up, I was confused by the reviews. Some people complained that it was too slow, but others said it was fine. This is a fantasy book, and also a whodunit mystery. The first half is indeed slow, but only because it's doing double duty to introduce the world and all the suspects. Once the crime occurs, things begin to happen quickly, and the tension skyrockets.I didn't catch this from the summary, but this is a retelling of Puss In Boots, if the Ogre was good and Puss was bad. (And really, in the original story, the ogre never hurt anybody.) and also a dragon Sherlock, because you can't go wrong with that. This is a lovely book, and I recommend it for anyone who loves both dragons and a good mystery.

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR WRITING AND AT 60 I AM RETURNING TO COLLEGE TO FINISH MY DEGREE IN CREATIVE WRITING, AND I WANTED TO SEE IF THE PASSION WAS STILL THERE. THIS BOOK HAS PROVEN TO BE VERY HELPFUL. I ENJOY THE EXERCISES, I HAVE HAD SOME FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO COMPLETE THE EXERCISES WITH ME. MY PASSION IS STILL THERE. PRAY FOR ME.

This is a book aimed at kids. The author says as much up front: she writes YA novels and teaches writing workshops for child and adolescent writers. The book does that very well: novel writing distilled into 20 or so basic principles. And like lots of books aimed at kids, it may also be helpful for beginners long past childhood. But if you've read a few craft books and written full-length novels of your own, this is not the book for you, because there's not much new here. If, on the other hand, you're facing a roomful of junior high schoolers, this definitely IS the book for you—and well worth every penny.
